Adopt a Spider Monkey

Common Name: Spider Monkey

Scientific Name: Ateles Fusciceps

Female: Elvira
Male: Cuco

Elvira and Cuco are both rescues with different histories. Elvira was a baby when rescued, she was dying after being stolen from her mother and family. She helps us explain to the visiting children (and adults) that these animals should not be stolen from their natural habitats. In order to acquire one spider monkey it is necessary to first kill its mother, followed by others in the tribe.

Furthermore, monkeys do not make good pets. Having to be in a cage their whole lives, they can suddenly become aggressive. Having grown up in captivity their whole lives, they can never be released into the wild. Cuco was being kept in a very small cage and his previous owner had lost interest in him. He was very skinny due to lack of adequate food and was very aggressive.
Both Elvira and Cuco live together and are visited by many admirers. It is unlikely they will breed. They eat lots of fruit, nuts, and occasionally bread. Occasionally they need anti-parasite medicine.

Daily cost: 20 Pesos each
